Manifesto

MY MANIFESTO CHUKWUEBUKA KINGSLEY MICHAEL ASPIRANT — SUG DIRECTOR OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT Theme: PRESERVING THE LEGACY. ADVANCING INCLUSION. BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY. ⸻ PAGE ONE MY STORY. MY PURPOSE. MY COMMITMENT. Fellow Unique Students, distinguished leaders, colleagues, friends, and members of the University of Port Harcourt community, I stand before you not merely as an aspirant seeking an office, but as a student who understands the meaning of representation, inclusion, resilience, and service. My name is Comr. Chukwuebuka Kingsley Michael, a student of the University of Port Harcourt, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Department of Film and Multimedia Production. I am seeking your mandate to serve as the SUG Director of Students with Special Needs because I believe that leadership is not about occupying a position; it is about accepting responsibility for people. I am not coming with empty political promises. I am coming with experience. I am coming with a history of participating in student leadership, engaging with student communities, working with different associations, and understanding the importance of giving people a voice. I have served in student leadership capacities, including responsibilities within student associations and unions. These experiences have taught me that leadership requires patience, communication, accountability, courage, and—most importantly—the willingness to stand for people even when it is inconvenient. But beyond every title I have held, there is something more important: I am a member of the community I seek to represent. I understand what it means to navigate university life while dealing with challenges that may not always be visible to everyone. I understand the frustration of wanting to participate fully but encountering barriers. I understand why representation must go beyond speeches and social media posts. And I understand that students with special needs do not need pity. We need inclusion. We need accessibility. We need dignity. We need opportunity. We need representation. That is why I am presenting myself for this office. ⸻ PAGE TWO PRESERVING THE LEGACY, ADVANCING THE VISION Every responsible leader understands that leadership is a continuum. No office begins with the person contesting today, and no meaningful legacy should end when a tenure expires. We already have a system. We have a foundation. We have a legacy established through the work and sacrifices of the Emeritus Director of Students with Special Needs. I acknowledge that legacy. I respect it. And I intend to build on it. My ambition is not to destroy what has already been built simply because I want to introduce myself as a new leader. Rather, I want to protect what works, correct what needs improvement, and introduce new ideas where necessary. MY PRINCIPLE: CONTINUITY WHERE IT WORKS. IMPROVEMENT WHERE IT IS NEEDED. INNOVATION WHERE IT IS POSSIBLE. The office of the Director of Students with Special Needs should not become a political decoration. It should remain a functional platform through which Unique Students can communicate their concerns, access opportunities, participate meaningfully in university activities, and feel represented within the student leadership structure. If elected, I will work to strengthen the relationship between the office and the students it represents. I will also encourage continuity between previous leadership and the incoming administration so that valuable knowledge, structures, contacts, initiatives, and experiences are not lost. 1. A STRONGER REPRESENTATION SYSTEM I will work toward a more organized representation structure that makes it easier for students with special needs to communicate their concerns. Representation should not begin and end during elections. There must be channels through which students can raise concerns, make suggestions, report challenges, and receive feedback. 2. ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION Inclusion must be practical. We must continue advocating for an academic and social environment where students with special needs can participate without unnecessary barriers. I will champion conversations around: * Accessible learning environments. * Better communication between students and relevant authorities. * Participation in student activities. * Awareness of the needs of students with disabilities. * Greater inclusion in leadership and campus programmes. * Advocacy against discrimination, stereotyping, and unnecessary exclusion. 3. BUILDING ON EXISTING STRUCTURES I will not pretend that everything begins with me. Where existing programmes, relationships, and structures are effective, I will strengthen them. Where they require improvement, I will seek improvement. Where there are gaps, I will advocate for solutions. The goal is not to take credit. The goal is to create impact. ⸻ PAGE THREE MY AGENDA FOR UNIQUE STUDENTS My administration will be guided by a simple belief: A university community becomes stronger when every student has a genuine opportunity to belong. Therefore, my agenda will focus on five major pillars. PILLAR ONE — REPRESENTATION I will promote a stronger voice for students with special needs within the SUG structure and the wider university community. The office must be accessible to the students. I will encourage regular engagement, consultation, and communication so that decisions affecting Unique Students are informed by their actual experiences. Nothing about us should be decided without meaningful consideration of us. ⸻ PILLAR TWO — INCLUSION Inclusion must move beyond slogans. We must create a culture where students with special needs are seen first for their abilities, talents, intelligence, creativity, and contributions—not merely for their conditions. I will advocate for greater participation of Unique Students in: * Academic programmes. * Leadership. * Sports and recreational activities. * Cultural activities. * Entertainment. * Skills development. * Student associations. * Entrepreneurship and empowerment programmes. Our differences should not become reasons for exclusion. They should become part of the diversity that makes our university community stronger. ⸻ PILLAR THREE — ADVOCACY AND AWARENESS Many barriers begin with misunderstanding. Some students are excluded because people do not understand their needs. Others experience stereotypes because society has already decided what they can or cannot achieve. I will promote awareness and constructive engagement within the student community. We must challenge the mentality that disability equals inability. We must challenge discrimination. We must challenge mockery. We must challenge exclusion. And we must replace them with understanding, respect, opportunity, and cooperation. INCLUSION IS NOT PITY. INCLUSION IS EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY. ⸻ PILLAR FOUR — EMPOWERMENT AND OPPORTUNITY Representation without opportunity is incomplete. I will advocate for initiatives that connect Unique Students to opportunities available within the university and beyond. This includes encouraging: * Skills acquisition. * Entrepreneurship opportunities. * Creative development. * Academic support initiatives. * Leadership opportunities. * Mentorship. * Networking. * Information sharing about scholarships, competitions, training, and other opportunities. A student’s condition should never be the reason their potential remains undiscovered. ⸻ PILLAR FIVE — ACCOUNTABILITY AND CONTINUITY Leadership must be accountable. If given the opportunity to serve, I will encourage an administration that communicates its activities and remains answerable to the students. I also believe that every administration should leave something behind for the next administration to improve. Therefore, I will support proper documentation and continuity. The next Director should not have to start from zero. The next leader should inherit a stronger structure. That is how legacies are built. ⸻ PAGE FOUR THE LEADERSHIP I AM OFFERING I am not asking you to vote for me because I am perfect. I am asking you to vote for me because I am willing to serve. I am asking you to trust my experience, my commitment, my understanding of our community, and my willingness to learn from those who came before me. I recognize the work of the leaders who have contributed to the development of the office. I recognize the foundation established by the Emeritus Director of Students with Special Needs. And I make this commitment: I will not abandon the legacy. I will not disregard the foundation. I will not erase the work of those before me. Instead: I WILL PRESERVE THE LEGACY. I WILL STRENGTHEN THE SYSTEM. I WILL ADVANCE THE VISION. I WILL CREATE ROOM FOR NEW POSSIBILITIES. My leadership will be about collaboration rather than isolation. I will work with student leaders, faculty representatives, associations, stakeholders, volunteers, and—most importantly—the students themselves. Because the office does not belong to one individual. It belongs to the students. ⸻ MY COMMITMENT TO YOU If elected, I will strive to be a Director who listens. A Director who communicates. A Director who advocates. A Director who collaborates. A Director who respects the past while preparing for the future. A Director who understands that leadership is service. I will not promise that every problem will disappear overnight. But I promise that the problems of Unique Students will not be ignored simply because they are difficult. When there is a challenge, we will engage. When there is an opportunity, we will pursue it. When there is injustice, we will speak. When there is progress, we will celebrate it. And when there is a need for improvement, we will not be afraid to improve. ⸻ MY VISION A UNIVERSITY WHERE EVERY UNIQUE STUDENT CAN BELONG, PARTICIPATE, LEAD, LEARN, AND THRIVE WITHOUT BEING DEFINED BY LIMITATIONS. I envision a student community where accessibility is taken seriously, where inclusion is practiced, where Unique Students are empowered to participate, and where their voices are respected. I envision an office that is not only active during election season but remains present throughout the academic year. I envision continuity. I envision stronger advocacy. I envision greater participation. I envision opportunity. Most importantly, I envision dignity. ⸻ MY FINAL APPEAL Dear Unique Students, This election is bigger than one individual. It is about what we want the office to represent. It is about whether we want to preserve the good foundation that has already been established while creating room for progress. It is about whether we want representation that listens. It is about whether we want inclusion that goes beyond words. It is about whether we want a leader who understands that the office is a responsibility—not a trophy. I am ready to serve. I am ready to listen. I am ready to learn. I am ready to work. And I am ready to carry the legacy forward. I am Comr. Chukwuebuka Kingsley Michael. I am not coming to replace a legacy. I am coming to continue it. I am not coming to speak for Unique Students without listening to them. I am coming to stand with them. I am not coming with empty promises. I am coming with commitment, experience, vision, and service. Together, let us preserve what has been built. Together, let us strengthen what exists. Together, let us create what is needed. Together, let us build a more inclusive University of Port Harcourt. VOTE CHUKWUEBUKA KINGSLEY MICHAEL FOR SUG DIRECTOR OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS PRESERVE THE LEGACY. ADVANCE THE VISION.
