Manifesto

MANIFESTO FOR THE OFFICE OF DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT, UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT Theme: INFORMATION THAT REACHES EVERY STUDENT 1. MY CORE BELIEF I believe that information is power, and an informed student is an empowered student. As a student leader aspiring to serve as the Director of Information, I stand for a communication system that is fast, accurate, transparent, accessible, and inclusive. No student should be disadvantaged because they did not receive important information on time. My administration will make effective information dissemination a priority. 2. THE PROBLEM The University of Port Harcourt is a large academic community, and information must move quickly to reach students across faculties, departments, levels, and campuses. However, students sometimes face challenges such as: Late circulation of important information. Unverified information and rumors. Poor coordination between student leaders and students. Important opportunities not reaching students on time. Inadequate use of digital communication platforms. Communication gaps between the SUG and students. Students having difficulty knowing which information is official. These challenges can create confusion, missed opportunities, and unnecessary anxiety among students. This must change. 3. MY ACTION PLAN A. FAST AND TIMELY INFORMATION I will work to ensure that important information from the SUG reaches students as quickly as possible. Academic updates, registration deadlines, examination information, welfare announcements, opportunities, and SUG activities will be communicated promptly. B. VERIFIED INFORMATION I will establish a culture of "Verify Before You Publish." Information released through the Director of Information's office will be properly verified to reduce misinformation and rumors. Students should know that when information comes from the official SUG communication channels, it can be trusted. C. DIGITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM I will maximize the use of modern communication platforms, including: WhatsApp Telegram Facebook Instagram X Official SUG communication channels The goal is to take information directly to students instead of waiting for students to search for it. D. FACULTY AND DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION NETWORK I will work with faculty and departmental student leaders to create an effective information network. This will help ensure that information moves from the SUG to faculties, departments, and individual students without unnecessary delays. E. WEEKLY STUDENT INFORMATION UPDATE I will introduce a regular student information update containing important developments, upcoming events, opportunities, deadlines, and SUG activities. This will give students a simple and reliable way to know what is happening around the university. F. INFORMATION FOR EVERY STUDENT My communication system will not focus only on a particular faculty, department, level, or group. Every student matters. I will promote inclusive information dissemination so that students across the University of Port Harcourt can have access to relevant information. G. STUDENT FEEDBACK AND TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION Information should not only move from leaders to students. I will create avenues through which students can: Ask questions. Make suggestions. Report communication problems. Seek clarification. Contribute ideas. The Director of Information should not only speak for students but also listen to students. H. PROMOTION OF STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES Scholarships, internships, seminars, competitions, conferences, academic opportunities, leadership opportunities, and other beneficial programs will receive proper publicity. No opportunity should remain hidden because of poor information dissemination. I. TRANSPARENCY IN SUG COMMUNICATION I will promote clear communication about SUG activities, programs, meetings, achievements, and important decisions. Students deserve to know what their representatives are doing. 4. MY GOAL My goal is to build a modern, reliable, student-centred information system within the Students' Union Government. I envision a University of Port Harcourt where: Information reaches students on time. Information is verified before it is released. Students know where to find official information. Students can communicate with their representatives. Every student has an opportunity to be heard. MY COMMITMENT If given the mandate to serve as your Director of Information, I will not promise what I cannot deliver. I promise to bring commitment, transparency, accessibility, responsibility, and innovation to the office. I will use the office not for personal recognition, but as a platform for effective communication and service to the entire student community. THE FUTURE WE WANT IS INFORMED. THE STUDENT WE WANT IS EMPOWERED. THE INFORMATION WE NEED MUST BE ACCURATE, TIMELY, AND ACCESSIBLE.
