Manifesto

MANIFESTO FOR THE OFFICE OF EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT (SUG), UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT SEN. FREEDOM OKECHUKWU AMADI Candidate for Executive President, SUG University of Port Harcourt THEME: FROM SERVICE TO STUDENT LEADERSHIP — A NEW ERA OF WELFARE, FREEDOM, ACCOUNTABILITY AND PROGRESS My Fellow Unique Uniport Students, I stand before you not merely to ask for your votes, but to present myself for a greater responsibility: the responsibility to serve, represent, protect and advance the interests of every student of the University of Port Harcourt. Leadership, to me, is not about occupying an office. Leadership is about identifying problems, finding solutions and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people you represent. Before seeking the office of Executive President, I have already chosen the path of service. Through the Freedom Okechukwu Amadi Foundation (F.O.A.F), I have consistently supported students, created initiatives, provided opportunities, promoted student welfare and put smiles on the faces of members of the student community. My philosophy is simple: «“Students' welfare is our priority.”» I believe the SUG must not only exist as an administrative body. It must become a strong, responsive and accessible institution that students can trust, approach and rely upon. I am therefore presenting a manifesto built around WELFARE, FREEDOM, REPRESENTATION, OPPORTUNITY, ACCOUNTABILITY, SECURITY, EDUCATION AND UNITY. --- 1. STUDENTS' WELFARE FIRST The welfare of students will remain at the centre of my administration. A student who is struggling with accommodation, feeding, transportation, academic materials or other basic challenges cannot be expected to perform at their best academically. My administration will work towards building a stronger welfare structure that identifies genuine student challenges and responds to them through practical interventions. Our priorities will include: - Strengthening student welfare support systems. - Creating channels through which students can report genuine welfare concerns. - Advocating for students facing unreasonable financial and institutional difficulties. - Supporting vulnerable students through available partnerships and welfare initiatives. - Promoting affordable and accessible student-centred programmes. - Working with relevant university authorities and stakeholders to address pressing welfare concerns. The SUG should be felt not only during elections but every day of the academic session. --- 2. AN ACCESSIBLE AND RESPONSIVE SUG A major problem students often face is the distance between leadership and the people being represented. I envision an administration where students do not have to struggle to reach their representatives. My administration will promote: - Regular student engagement forums. - Open channels for complaints, suggestions and petitions. - Periodic reports on the activities of the administration. - Direct interaction between students and SUG representatives. - A responsive communication system for urgent student matters. I want every student to know that their voice matters. Whether you are a fresher, finalist, undergraduate, postgraduate, hostel resident or off-campus student, you deserve representation. --- 3. ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND STUDENT SUCCESS The primary reason we are here is education. Therefore, the SUG must actively support an environment where students can learn, grow and succeed. My administration will advocate for initiatives that promote: - Academic tutorials and peer-learning programmes. - Educational seminars and career development programmes. - Access to useful academic resources. - Research and innovation opportunities. - Academic mentorship. - Competitions that encourage intellectual development. - Partnerships that expose students to internships, scholarships and professional opportunities. We must build a student union that does not only fight for students when there is a problem, but also creates opportunities for students to become better versions of themselves. --- 4. STUDENT EMPLOYABILITY, SKILLS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP A university education should prepare students not only to seek jobs but also to create value. I will promote programmes that expose students to practical skills and entrepreneurship. Possible areas of focus include: - Digital skills. - Entrepreneurship training. - Leadership development. - Financial literacy. - Creative industries. - Technology and innovation. - Public speaking and communication. - Career preparation. - Internship and mentorship opportunities. The goal is to help students graduate with more than a certificate — with competence, confidence and capacity. --- 5. STUDENT SECURITY AND SAFETY No student should feel unsafe while pursuing education. My administration will advocate for improved student safety and stronger collaboration between the university community and relevant security stakeholders. We will push for: - Better communication of security concerns. - Prompt reporting and escalation of security issues. - Safety awareness programmes. - Attention to vulnerable areas around student residences and movement routes. - Stronger collaboration with appropriate authorities. Student safety must never be treated as an afterthought. --- 6. HOSTEL AND OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT WELFARE Every Uniport student deserves representation, regardless of where they live. Hostel students and off-campus students face different challenges, and the SUG must understand these realities. My administration will pay attention to concerns surrounding: - Accommodation. - Transportation. - Water and sanitation. - Electricity and basic infrastructure. - Safety. - Cost of living. - Student movement and accessibility. Every student is a Uniport student, regardless of their address. --- 7. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND STUDENT REPRESENTATION The SUG must be a voice for students. I believe students should be able to express their concerns, ideas and opinions responsibly without fear or intimidation. My administration will promote: - Constructive student engagement. - Respectful dialogue. - Open forums. - Responsible advocacy. - Transparent representation. - Protection of legitimate student interests. The word FREEDOM in my name is not merely a name. It represents an ideal: «A student community where people are heard, respected and given the opportunity to participate in decisions that affect them.» --- 8. ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY Leadership without accountability is incomplete. If elected, I will advocate for an administration that communicates clearly with students about its programmes, engagements and achievements. Students deserve to know: What is the administration doing? What has been achieved? What challenges exist? What is being pursued? I will promote periodic communication and accountability mechanisms within the limits of the SUG constitution and university regulations. Public office should never become personal property. It is a trust. --- 9. PARTNERSHIPS AND PRIVATE-SECTOR SUPPORT The challenges facing students cannot always be solved by SUG alone. We need strategic partnerships with: - Alumni. - Private organisations. - NGOs. - Entrepreneurs. - Educational institutions. - Government agencies. - Philanthropists. - Corporate organisations. - Successful Uniport graduates. My experience with the Freedom Okechukwu Amadi Foundation has shown me the importance of partnerships and community-based initiatives. I intend to bring that spirit of collaboration into student leadership. --- 10. SPORTS, FITNESS AND ENTERTAINMENT Students need opportunities to relax, connect and develop their talents. My administration will promote: - Sporting competitions. - Fitness activities. - Inter-faculty competitions. - Talent development. - Cultural programmes. - Student entertainment programmes. - Recreational activities. The success of initiatives such as student-focused fitness activities has demonstrated that students appreciate programmes that promote health, friendship, participation and positive engagement. --- 11. SUPPORT FOR STUDENT TALENTS AND CREATIVES Uniport is filled with talented students. From musicians and actors to designers, writers, entrepreneurs, athletes, photographers, content creators and innovators, there is enormous potential within our student community. My administration will seek opportunities to: - Showcase student talents. - Organise talent competitions. - Create networking opportunities. - Connect students with mentors. - Encourage student-owned businesses. - Promote student creativity. We should not wait until students graduate before recognising their potential. --- 12. GENDER INCLUSION AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY Every student deserves dignity and fair representation. My administration will encourage an inclusive student union where opportunities are not restricted by gender, faculty, department, background or social status. Leadership should unite students rather than divide them. --- 13. A STRONGER SUG — WORKING WITH STUDENT LEADERS The Executive President cannot do everything alone. A successful SUG administration requires teamwork among: - The President. - Vice President. - Secretary-General. - Treasurer. - Financial Secretary. - Public Relations Officer. - Welfare officers. - Faculty representatives. - Hall and departmental representatives. - Other recognised student leadership structures. I will promote cooperation and coordination among student representatives so that the SUG speaks with a stronger and more organised voice. --- 14. CONTINUITY OF SERVICE One of the strongest reasons I am presenting myself for this office is that my desire to serve did not begin with this election. Through the Freedom Okechukwu Amadi Foundation, I have already demonstrated a commitment to student-centred initiatives. From welfare-oriented programmes to activities designed to bring happiness, fitness, opportunities and support to students, the foundation represents an existing culture of service. I am not asking you to vote for an idea without evidence. I am asking you to look at the principle behind my journey: SERVICE BEFORE POWER. The SUG presidency should be an expansion of service, not a departure from it. --- 15. MY LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES If elected, my administration will be guided by five core principles: 1. SERVICE I will remember that the office exists because students entrusted it to us. 2. ACCOUNTABILITY Leadership must answer to the people. 3. ACCESSIBILITY Students must be able to reach their representatives. 4. INCLUSION Every student deserves to be represented. 5. RESULTS Promises must translate into measurable action. --- MY COMMITMENT TO UNIQUE UNIPORT STUDENTS My fellow students, I do not promise that every problem will disappear overnight. Leadership requires honesty. Some problems require negotiations. Some require funding. Some require institutional approval. Some require collaboration with external stakeholders. But I promise this: I will listen. I will engage. I will advocate. I will negotiate. I will pursue solutions. And where a problem cannot be solved immediately, I will communicate honestly with the students. I will never intentionally make promises simply because they sound attractive during an election. I would rather promise commitment, transparency and determined service than make unrealistic promises. --- OUR VISION A SUG THAT STUDENTS CAN TRUST. A SUG that is: WELFARE-DRIVEN. STUDENT-CENTRED. ACCOUNTABLE. ACCESSIBLE. INCLUSIVE. PROGRESSIVE. UNITED. --- WHY FREEDOM OKECHUKWU AMADI? Because leadership should be judged by character, capacity, consistency and service. My foundation has provided me with an opportunity to interact with students, understand some of their struggles and develop initiatives that bring value to the student community. That experience has taught me something important: «You cannot effectively represent people if you do not listen to them.» I have listened. I have served. I have supported. And I am ready to do more. --- A CALL FOR UNITY This election should not divide us. We may come from different faculties, departments, halls, communities and backgrounds, but we share one identity: WE ARE UNIQUE UNIPORT STUDENTS. Let us build a student union where leadership is not about intimidation, personal interests or empty promises. Let us build one where service is celebrated, accountability is expected and student welfare is prioritised. --- CONCLUSION My fellow students, I am SEN. FREEDOM OKECHUKWU AMADI, and I am offering myself for the office of Executive President, Student Union Government, University of Port Harcourt. I come with a record of service. I come with a vision. I come with a willingness to listen. I come with the determination to work. And most importantly, I come with a commitment to put students first. The journey from foundation-led service to student leadership is not a change in purpose. It is an expansion of purpose. What we have started through service, we can strengthen through responsible representation. FROM SERVICE TO LEADERSHIP. FROM PROMISES TO ACTION. FROM REPRESENTATION TO RESULTS. SEN. FREEDOM OKECHUKWU AMADI FOR EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT — UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT “STUDENTS' WELFARE, OUR PRIORITY.” Together, we can build a SUG that listens, serves and delivers.
