Manifesto

MANIFESTO FOR THE OFFICE OF DEPUTY SENATE PRESIDENT IGWE PRINCESS CHIKERENMA 200 Level, Linguistics and Language Arts Candidate for Deputy Senate President A CALL TO PURPOSE, SERVICE AND RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP Leadership, to me, is not about the title attached to a name. It is about the lives touched, the voices represented, and the difference made when entrusted with responsibility. The office of Deputy Senate President is not merely a position of prestige. It is a position of trust, responsibility, coordination and service. It requires someone who understands that leadership is not about standing above the people, but standing with them. I, Igwe Princess Chikerenma, present myself for the office of Deputy Senate President with a clear understanding of the responsibility this office demands and a sincere commitment to serve the Senate and the entire student community with integrity, courage and purpose. I am not coming with promises that sound beautiful during campaigns and disappear after elections. I am coming with a vision for a Senate that is active, accessible, accountable and genuinely representative of the students it serves. My ambition is simple: to help build a legislative arm that does not merely exist, but works. --- 1. A SENATE THAT LISTENS A representative government begins with listening. Students have concerns about academics, welfare, accommodation, transportation, security, campus policies, opportunities and the general quality of student life. Too often, these concerns remain conversations among students without becoming meaningful conversations within leadership. As Deputy Senate President, I will advocate for a Senate that creates stronger channels of communication between students and their representatives. I will encourage an atmosphere where senators do not only appear when elections are approaching, but remain connected to the people they represent throughout their tenure. The student should never have to wonder, “Who is speaking for me?” My goal is to promote a Senate where students know that their concerns can be heard, properly presented and followed through. --- 2. STRENGTHENING LEGISLATIVE EFFECTIVENESS A Senate is only as effective as the work it produces. The legislature should be a place where ideas are examined, policies are debated, problems are identified and solutions are developed. I will support measures that encourage senators to take their legislative responsibilities seriously. I will advocate for: - More purposeful and constructive legislative debates. - Proper consideration of motions and bills presented before the Senate. - Encouragement of research-based and student-focused legislation. - Better coordination between senators and their constituencies. - Constructive collaboration between the Senate and other arms of government. - A legislative culture built on facts, reason and the genuine interest of students. I believe disagreement should not automatically become division. A strong legislature is one where people can hold different opinions while still working toward a common goal. We can debate passionately without losing our sense of purpose. --- 3. ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY Leadership without accountability is simply power without direction. Students deserve to know that the representatives they elected are conscious of the responsibility placed in their hands. I will promote a culture where legislative activities are treated with seriousness and where representatives remain accountable to the people. As Deputy Senate President, I will support initiatives that encourage: - Transparency in legislative proceedings. - Proper documentation of legislative activities. - Regular communication between representatives and their constituencies. - Responsible handling of the Senate's responsibilities and resources. - Greater awareness of students' rights, responsibilities and opportunities within the Students' Union. Accountability should not be something we demand from others while avoiding it ourselves. If we ask students to trust us, we must give them reasons to. --- 4. UNITY BEYOND POLITICS Elections will come and go. Campaigns will end. Political differences will eventually become memories. But we will remain one student community. I believe leadership must know when politics ends and service begins. As Deputy Senate President, I will work toward fostering cooperation among senators, faculties, departments, student groups and the various interests represented within the Union. Our diversity should not be a weakness. It should be our strength. I envision a Senate where no senator feels ignored because of their faculty, department, affiliation or political background. Every constituency matters. Every voice counts. Every student deserves representation. --- 5. STUDENT-CENTRED LEGISLATION Laws and policies should not exist merely because they can be written. They should exist because they solve problems. I will encourage legislation that responds to the realities students actually face. I will support conversations and initiatives around: Academic welfare — encouraging policies that promote a better academic environment and address issues affecting students' educational experience. Student welfare — giving meaningful attention to issues that affect students' daily lives and overall campus experience. Opportunities and development — supporting initiatives that expose students to leadership, entrepreneurship, skills development, mentorship and career opportunities. Inclusivity — encouraging an environment where students can participate meaningfully in student governance regardless of their background. Information and awareness — promoting better communication so students are aware of opportunities, policies and decisions that concern them. The Senate should not legislate in isolation from the people. The people must remain at the centre of the process. --- 6. A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE SENATE AND THE EXECUTIVE The Deputy Senate President occupies an important position within the legislative leadership of the Students' Union. I intend to use that position to encourage constructive collaboration between the Senate and the Executive arm, while still respecting the independence and constitutional responsibilities of each arm. Oversight should not mean unnecessary hostility. Collaboration should not mean abandoning responsibility. There must be room for both. I will support a relationship between the arms of government that is built on communication, mutual respect, constructive criticism and the shared objective of improving student welfare. Where the Executive succeeds, the Senate should acknowledge it. Where the Executive falls short, the Senate should responsibly ask questions and demand better. That is what responsible governance looks like. --- 7. EMPOWERING THE SENATORS A Senate is not built around one person. The office of Deputy Senate President should therefore be used to encourage every senator to understand the weight of their mandate and the importance of their contribution. I will promote an environment where senators are encouraged to: - Understand parliamentary procedures. - Participate actively in debates. - Research issues before presenting them. - Engage their constituents. - Collaborate with one another. - Develop confidence in legislative leadership. - Understand that representation is a responsibility, not a privilege. When senators become better representatives, the entire Senate becomes stronger. I do not seek to lead a Senate that depends on one voice. I seek to help build a Senate where many responsible voices can contribute meaningfully. --- MY COMMITMENT If entrusted with this office, I will not claim perfection. I will make mistakes, because leadership is a learning process. But I promise to remain willing to listen, willing to learn, willing to improve and, most importantly, willing to serve. I will carry this office with humility. I will respect the Constitution. I will respect the Senate. I will respect opposing opinions. I will respect the students whose mandate I seek. And when difficult decisions arise, I will remember that leadership is not measured by how comfortable a decision is, but by how faithfully it serves the people. --- THE VISION My vision is of a Senate that students can look at and say: “They are working.” A Senate where debates have purpose. Where representation has meaning. Where accountability is normal. Where senators are accessible. Where legislation responds to real problems. Where political differences do not destroy unity. And where leadership is measured not by how loudly we speak, but by what we are able to accomplish. I am Igwe Princess Chikerenma, and I am seeking your mandate not simply to occupy the office of Deputy Senate President, but to contribute to a Senate that is stronger, more responsible, more responsive and more connected to the students it represents. This campaign is bigger than one person. It is about the kind of student leadership we want to build. It is about choosing responsibility over entitlement. Service over self. Purpose over position. And progress over politics. MY PROMISE IS NOT THAT I WILL HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS. MY PROMISE IS THAT I WILL NEVER STOP SEEKING BETTER ANSWERS FOR THE PEOPLE I SERVE. Together, let us build a legislative arm that listens. Together, let us build a Senate that works. Together, let us make representation mean something. IGWE PRINCESS CHIKERENMA FOR DEPUTY SENATE PRESIDENT Leadership with Purpose. Representation with Responsibility. Service with Results.
