Manifesto
MY MANIFESTO IHUOMA BLESSING CHISOM ASPIRING FOR THE POSITION OF SUG JUDGE • 2026 1. INTRODUCTION My Story, My Purpose Leadership, to me, is not about occupying a seat; it is about accepting responsibility for the people who trust you. My decision to aspire for the position of SUG Judge is rooted in a desire to contribute to a student government where fairness, due process, accountability and respect are not merely words, but principles that guide every decision. I believe the Judiciary must be independent, accessible and courageous enough to protect the rights of every student. The SUG Judge should not be a judge for a particular group, faculty, department or interest. The Judge should be a servant of justice — fair to everyone, firm when necessary, and humble enough to listen. My purpose is simple: to help build a student judicial system where every student who comes before it feels heard, respected and fairly treated. 2. MY QUALITIES The Person I Bring to the Bench - Integrity: I value honesty and will not allow friendship, pressure or personal interest to determine my judgment. - Fair-mindedness: I am committed to hearing both sides before reaching a conclusion. - Confidence with humility: I can stand for what is right while remaining open to correction and better arguments. - Responsibility: I understand that judicial leadership requires discipline, confidentiality and accountability. - Communication: I believe disputes are better handled through clear explanations, respectful dialogue and proper procedure. - Student-centered leadership: I will remember that every rule exists to serve a community of students, not to intimidate them. These qualities will shape the way I approach every matter brought before the SUG Judiciary. 3. UNDERSTANDING MY ROLE The Judge I Will Be If elected SUG Judge, I will approach the office with a clear understanding that judicial authority comes with responsibility. I will respect the constitution and applicable electoral and student-government rules, while ensuring that proceedings are conducted with order, impartiality and respect for all parties. I will strive to separate personal relationships from judicial responsibilities. Where a matter creates a genuine conflict of interest, I will act transparently and in accordance with the applicable rules rather than allowing personal considerations to influence the process. The Judge I will be will be: - Impartial — giving every party an equal opportunity to present their case. - Principled — guided by rules and evidence rather than popularity. - Accessible — encouraging students to understand the procedures available to them. - Firm but fair — maintaining order without humiliating or intimidating anyone. - Independent — making decisions based on the merits of each matter. 4. MY AGENDA FOR THE JUDICIARY Three Key Reforms I Will Champion 1. A Clearer Student Justice Process I will support efforts to make judicial procedures easier for students to understand: how complaints are submitted, how parties are notified, how hearings are conducted, and how decisions are communicated. Justice should not feel like a mystery to the people it serves. 2. Fair Hearing and Due Process No student should be condemned without a fair opportunity to be heard. I will promote a culture where allegations are considered carefully, parties are treated respectfully, and decisions are based on relevant facts, applicable rules and proper procedure. 3. Judicial Accountability and Professionalism I will encourage orderly records, responsible communication and professional conduct within the limits of the governing rules. The Judiciary must earn trust through consistency, transparency and respect for its own procedures. My goal is not to create conflict; my goal is to create confidence in the process. 5. A FRAMEWORK FOR COLLABORATIVE GOVERNANCE The Judge I Will Be: A Bridge Builder The SUG Judiciary cannot operate in isolation from the wider student community. Judicial independence must be preserved, but independence does not mean disconnection. I will promote respectful institutional relationships while keeping judicial decisions free from improper influence. Level 1: Working With All SUG Stakeholders I will encourage mutual respect among students, officers and representatives, especially where disputes require interpretation of rules or clarification of responsibilities. Level 2: Working With the Executive Council I will respect the distinct functions of the Executive while ensuring that judicial matters remain subject to appropriate judicial processes. Cooperation will never mean compromising judicial independence. Level 3: Working With the Legislative/Senate Arm Where constitutional or procedural questions arise, I will support constructive engagement and clear interpretation of the governing framework, without allowing personal or political interests to determine judicial outcomes. Level 4: Working With the Judicial Council I will promote professionalism, collegiality, confidentiality and consistency. A strong Judiciary requires members who understand that judicial office is a duty, not a privilege for personal influence. Level 5: Working With Faculty Governments Faculty-level concerns can sometimes become wider student-government issues. I will support channels through which concerns can be properly directed to the appropriate authority, while respecting the boundaries of each body. Level 6: Working With Departmental Governments I will encourage awareness of students' rights and responsibilities at the departmental level and promote peaceful resolution of disputes before they escalate, where appropriate. Level 7: Working With Students Directly Students are the reason student government exists. I will support a Judiciary that listens, explains its procedures and treats every student with dignity, regardless of status, popularity, faculty or affiliation. Bridge building does not mean taking sides. It means creating understanding while protecting the independence of justice. 6. MY CORE VALUES What Guides Me - JUSTICE: Every decision must pursue fairness and the proper application of the rules. - INTEGRITY: I will not trade principle for popularity, friendship or pressure. - IMPARTIALITY: The identity or influence of a person should never determine how a matter is treated. - RESPECT: Every party deserves to be heard and treated with dignity, even when the decision does not favour them. - CONFIDENTIALITY: Sensitive judicial matters must be handled with discretion and responsibility. - ACCOUNTABILITY: Judicial office requires responsibility for one's conduct, decisions and use of entrusted authority. 7. MY PLEDGE What I Commit To If you entrust me with the office of SUG Judge, I pledge to serve with a clear conscience and a steady commitment to fairness. I will listen before I decide. I will seek facts before conclusions. I will respect the rules before personal interests. I will treat every student with dignity, regardless of who they are or whom they support. I pledge not to use the office as a platform for intimidation, personal retaliation or political advantage. I will strive to ensure that judicial processes are approached with seriousness and that the dignity of the SUG Judiciary is protected. I will also remain willing to learn. No judge knows everything, and no leader is beyond correction. Where the governing framework provides a procedure, I will follow it. Where clarification is required, I will seek it through proper channels. My promise is not that every person will receive the decision they want. My promise is that every person deserves a fair process. A strong Judiciary is not measured only by how many cases it handles. It is measured by the confidence students have that when they seek justice, they will be treated fairly. 8. CONCLUSION Why You Should Vote For Me I am not asking for your vote simply because I want a title. I am asking for your trust because I understand the weight that comes with judicial office. The SUG Judge must be more than a name on an election ballot; the office requires discipline, courage, fairness and a deep respect for due process. Ihuoma Blessing Chisom represents a choice for principled and student-focused judicial leadership. I will bring my commitment to integrity, impartiality, accountability and respectful communication to the office. I believe our student government becomes stronger when justice is accessible, when disputes are handled peacefully, and when every student knows that the system can listen without prejudice.
