Manifesto

MANIFESTO READING FOR THE OFFICE OF VICE PRESIDENT STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT, UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT. The Distinguished Speaker, The President and members of the Students’Union Government, The electoral committee, Leaders of various faculties, departments and associations, And most importantly, my fellow students of the University of Port Harcourt, Good day to you all. My name is Samuel Barivule Love, I come before you today with humility, courage and a genuine desire to serve as the Vice President of the Students’ Union Government. My fellow Students I stand before you not merely as a candidate seeking a position, but as a student who understands the realities, aspirations, frustrations and expectations of the students of the University of Port Harcourt. I am aspiring to serve as your Vice President of the Students’ Union Government because I believe leadership is not about occupying an office; it is about accepting responsibility. It is not about titles, popularity or personal recognition; it is about service, sacrifice, representation and results. The office of Vice President must be more than a constitutional position. It must be a bridge between students and leadership, a voice for the voiceless, a dependable partner to the President, and a servant who is accessible to every student regardless of faculty, department, level, background or political affiliation. This manifesto therefore represents my commitment to building a Students’ Union Government that is accessible, accountable, responsive, inclusive and development-oriented. 1. MY VISION My vision is to contribute to the emergence of a Students’ Union Government where: Every student feels represented. Students can communicate with their representatives without unnecessary barriers. Student welfare is treated as a priority rather than an afterthought. Leadership operates with transparency and accountability. Academic excellence is actively supported. Students are equipped with practical skills beyond the classroom. Student entrepreneurs receive meaningful support and exposure. Students’ voices are taken seriously in matters affecting their welfare I envision a union that does not only react to problems but engages stakeholders and pursues sustainable solutions. 2. MY MISSION If entrusted with this responsibility, my mission will be to work collaboratively with the President, other elected officers, faculty representatives, departmental representatives, university authorities and relevant stakeholders to advance the interests of students. I will promote a leadership culture founded on: S — Service Leadership must begin and end with service. A — Accountability Every mandate entrusted to us must come with responsibility. F — Fairness Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and equality. E — Empowerment Students should leave university with more than a degree; they should leave with competence, confidence and opportunities. R — Representation The voice of every student matters. 3. STUDENTS’ WELFARE AS A PRIORITY A Students’ Union cannot claim to represent students if it does not understand their everyday realities. Students face challenges involving accommodation, transportation, feeding, academic resources, financial pressure, security, healthcare, campus facilities and other welfare concerns. As Vice President, I will advocate for a stronger welfare structure that identifies pressing student challenges and works toward practical solutions. Proposed initiatives include: Student Welfare Desk: A responsive platform where students can submit welfare complaints, concerns and requests for assistance. Welfare Outreach: Regular engagement with students across faculties and departments to identify issues before they become crises. Emergency Support Advocacy: Working with relevant stakeholders to establish mechanisms for students facing genuine emergencies. Student Welfare Information System: Ensuring students are properly informed about available university and Students’ Union services, opportunities and support mechanisms. 4.ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND EXCELLENCE The primary reason we are in the university is education. Our Students’ Union should therefore contribute meaningfully to the academic success of students. I will support initiatives aimed at: Peer-to-peer academic mentorship. Academic resource sharing. Tutorials and revision programmes where feasible. Departmental academic collaborations. Access to useful educational materials. Orientation programmes for newly admitted students. Academic mentorship connecting experienced students with younger students. Recognition of outstanding academic performance. 5 SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYABILITY A university education should prepare students for life beyond graduation. The modern graduate needs more than academic qualifications. Students need digital skills, communication skills, leadership abilities, entrepreneurship knowledge and practical professional exposure. I will advocate for a Student Skills and Employability Initiative focused on areas such as: Digital literacy Geographic Information Systems and emerging technologies Data analysis Artificial intelligence awareness Graphic design Coding and software development Digital marketing Public speaking Leadership Entrepreneurship Financial literacy Career development Professional networking The objective will be to help students become competitive graduates, innovative entrepreneurs and confident professionals. 6 TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY Trust must be earned. As an elected officer, I will support a culture where students are properly informed about the activities of their representatives. I believe students deserve to know: What is being done? Why is it being done? Who is responsible? What progress has been made? Where information can responsibly be made public, it should be communicated clearly. I will encourage regular reporting of activities and constructive feedback from students. Leadership should never become a private club. The Students’ Union belongs to the students. 7.FRESH STUDENTS’ INTEGRATION For many new students, entering university can be overwhelming. They are introduced to new academic systems, unfamiliar environments, new responsibilities and a completely different way of life. I will support initiatives that help fresh students understand: Academic expectations. Student leadership structures. Available university services. Responsible campus living. Career opportunities. Student rights and responsibilities. Opportunities available through student organizations. A properly informed student is an empowered student. A CALL TO THE GREAT UNIPORT SUG My fellow students, This election is not simply about choosing a name. It is about choosing the kind of representation we want. It is about choosing whether our voices should be heard. It is about choosing whether our welfare should matter. It is about choosing whether leadership should be accessible. It is about choosing whether our union should become stronger, more responsive and more student-centered. I am asking for your support, not because I believe I am above anyone, but because I believe service is a responsibility we must be willing to accept. I am ready to listen. I am ready to learn. I am ready to work. I am ready to collaborate. And above all, I am ready to serve. MY PLEDGE If you entrust me with your mandate as Vice President of the Students’ Union Government, I will carry that mandate with humility and responsibility. I will remember that the office belongs to the students. I will remember that every vote represents someone’s expectation. I will remember that leadership is temporary, but the impact of leadership can last for generations. I will therefore strive to make my tenure one defined not merely by speeches, posters and ceremonies, but by service, advocacy, engagement and impact. CONCLUSION The University of Port Harcourt is not simply an institution. It is a community of young minds preparing to shape the future. The students of this great institution deserve leadership that believes in them, listens to them and works for them. Together, we can build a Students’ Union that is: Responsive. Accountable. Inclusive. Innovative. Student-centered. Development-oriented. I am offering myself for service. I am offering my time. I am offering my energy. I am offering my ideas. I am offering my commitment. And I am asking you to join me in building a better Students’ Union Government. THE OFFICE IS NOT THE PRIZE. SERVICE IS THE MANDATE. THE STUDENTS ARE THE PRIORITY. Together, let us move from promises to purposeful action. Together, let us build a stronger voice for every student. Together, let us make student leadership work.
